The Reason I’ve Re-posted a Call to Action

Participating in collective action rejuvenates individuals and their communities.

In the old days, which was not that long ago, I said it this way, “Be part of a cause greater than yourself.” There's nothing wrong with that formulation.

For example, a family struggling with chronic mental illness might get involved with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The Future Perfect Project gives opportunity for safe and secure creative expression for LGBTQ+ youth. There is an amazing variety of ways to participate in a greater cause based on a personal experience. It turns pain into purpose.

My profession’s mainstream trains us to be apolitical while providing psychotherapy. Exploring volunteerism fits that training. In contrast, advocating active resistance is a different approach emphasized by important unconventional psychotherapies such as Feminist Psychotherapy, Liberation Psychology, and Intersectional Psychotherapy. Resistance to oppression through collective action is both empowering and healing.
